Guitar tuner

Tune by ear through your microphone. Nothing is recorded and nothing leaves your browser.

How to tune your guitar

  1. 1

Tap “Turn on the microphone” and let your browser use it. Nothing is recorded and nothing is uploaded — the pitch is worked out on your own device.

  2. 2

Play one open string on its own and let it ring. A quiet room helps: the tuner follows the loudest note it can hear.

  3. 3

It names the note and shows how far off you are in cents. Turn the peg until the reading settles on zero and the string goes green.

  4. 4

Do all six, then go back and check the first one again. Tightening a string pulls on the neck and drags the others slightly with it.

Standard tuning, string by string

Standard tuning is E A D G B E, counted from the thickest string to the thinnest. These are the frequencies the tuner listens for, at concert pitch (A4 = 440 Hz).

Other tunings

The tuner names whatever note it hears, so it works for any tuning at all — you only need to know which note each string is meant to land on.

Drop DD A D G B E
Standard tuning with the lowest string dropped a whole tone to D. One finger then covers a power chord, which is why so much rock and metal is written in it.
Half step downE♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭
Every string down one semitone. Slacker strings, a darker sound and an easier sing — Hendrix and a great deal of blues live here.
Open GD G D G B D
The open strings sound a G major chord on their own. Slide and Rolling Stones country; the lowest string is often left off the guitar entirely.

Questions

Is this guitar tuner free?
Completely. No account, no download, no limit on how often you use it. Ads pay for the site.
How accurate is it?
It reads to about one cent, finer than an ear can hear on a single note. What actually limits it is your microphone and the room — a quiet room and one clearly plucked string give the steadiest reading.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, on Android and iPhone as well as on a computer. The page has to be opened over https for the browser to allow the microphone at all.
Can I tune a bass or a ukulele with it?
Yes. It names any note it hears; only the picture of the pegs is a guitar. Tune to the notes your own instrument wants and ignore the six labels.
Is my microphone recorded?
No. The sound is analysed inside your browser and never leaves your device — nothing is uploaded, stored or shared.
